Analysis of Bidding Behavior: New York Control Area

In light of the current credit crunch and general industry malaise, ESAI views the issue of asset optimization as critical for participants moving forward in a market where speculation has become a dirty word.

Companies need to bid their generating assets dynamically according to where they lie on the dispatch stack and what the elasticity of demand is at that point. Generators should be developing pricing policies that are integrated and that leverage all available resources and inter-play opportunities.

ESAI's recent study, Analysis of Bidding Behavior: New York Control Area indicates that although some generators in New York are trying to optimize the value of their asset, the vast majority of market participants seems to disregard optimization strategies and is content to let others determine their asset revenue stream.

This important finding refutes the belief held by many in the industry that unit operators frequently attempt to manipulate power price levels through their generator bid curves. In fact, ESAI's study presents eight different bidding patterns that emerged from the analysis, each with its own unique characteristics.
