The Petroleum and Alternatives practice provides a wide range of services to energy and energy related companies all over the world since 1984. As explained under Services/Products, one of our unique resources is our empirical source database on global oil and liquid fuels fundamentals.
In 1978, ESAI began building a database of commercial and government-held oil inventories for every country that held inventories and tracked them in their national statistics. In subsequent years, ESAI also began collecting data on supply and demand. Today, global petroleum data are more plentiful, but also more complicated and potentially unreliable; ESAI’s 25-year experience with collecting and interpreting data from both emerging and established countries has led to the development of a unique and evidence-based source of market intelligence. With this data base, the Petroleum and Alternatives team analyzes the supply/demand factors which shape oil prices.
The quantitative supply/demand analysis is complemented by detailed political, regulatory and industrial analysis. ESAI maintains a database of environmental specifications, taxes, tariffs and subsidies and combines that information with ongoing political, financial and regulatory research to determine future market trends in countries and regions. In addition, we study and interpret key geopolitical developments that impact the global energy markets. Since 2008, our team collects, organizes and quantifies the impact of individual non-petroleum alternative fuels and vehicle technology on the broader national, regional and global petroleum markets. The Petroleum and Alternatives team is organized along geographic, policy/regulatory and market/industry lines:
| Geographic Expertise | Policy/Regulatory Expertise | Market/Industry Expertise |
|---|---|---|
| North America | Geopolitics | Crude oil |
| Latin America | Paper Markets | Condensates/NGLS |
| OECD Europe | Finance/Investment | Nonconventional Oils |
| Non-OECD Europe | Macroeconomics | Refining |
| FSU | Crude Oil Quality | Petrochemicals |
| Middle East | Product Specifications | Natural Gas |
| Africa | Taxes/Subsidies | Gasoline |
| Asia-Pacific | Climate Policy | Naphtha |
| Alternative Fuels | Diesel | |
| Vehicle Technology/Fuel Economy | Jet Fuel/Kero | |
| Fuel Oil |
We organize all of the research activities to develop a future view (not a series of scenarios) of the energy markets. Those forecasts for global, regional and local markets range from one week to 25 year outlooks.
